Kapahulu Barricade Ends After Deputy Sheriff Shot
A tense standoff in Kapahulu lasted nearly 16 hours after a state deputy sheriff was shot Tuesday morning during a federal drug operation.
Authorities say DEA agents and local officers were serving a narcotics warrant at a home on Herbert Street around 9 a.m. when the suspect opened fire, injuring a deputy sheriff in the hand and shoulder with shrapnel. The deputy was treated and released from the hospital later that day.
The suspect barricaded himself inside the home and at one point livestreamed on Facebook while armed and speaking with negotiators. Nearby residents reported hearing rapid gunfire, and surrounding streets were shut down as police urged people to avoid the area. A voluntary evacuation was issued, with Paki Hale opened as an assembly site.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday, the suspect and another individual surrendered peacefully and were taken into federal custody. Authorities thanked the public for their patience as roads reopen and the investigation continues.
